About the topic
SE, Systems Engineering, stands for a method for use by any company and line of business that was developed at the BWI Center for Industrial Management at ETH Zurich many years ago and has since been tried and tested in numerous practical applications , in any size of company and line of business. Systems Engineering enables you to analyze and solve complex problems with technical, organizational, and social systems in the company in a systematic and structured way.

Who should attend the seminar?
Leaders and professionals with project responsibility in industry and services (including public administration) concerned with the introduction, reorganization, or improvement of business and supporting processes.

Your benefit
You will gain theoretical knowledge of systems, systematic design and configuration of systems in the company as well as the practical everyday ability to apply Systems Engineering. You will learn to apply a methodology that not only aids problem-solving but also serves as an important means of communication, particularly in project management with an interdisciplinary team. You will also acquire experience and comparative knowledge as you become acquainted with the problems and problem-solving procedures at fellow seminar participants’ companies.

Your company’s benefit
Participants will bring with them a specific company problem or task that they expect to lead and execute or are already working on (or possibly have already completed). In the months following you will work out the stages «situation analysis» and «formulation of objectives» within your company framework as well as the first parts of the «synthesis of solutions» step of the Systems Engineering problem-solving process. In your systematic work a BWI specialist will advise you. The presentation and discussion of all participants’ projects will facilitate mutual exchange and give you an understanding of the diversity of applications.

Contents
Day 1: Seminar
Overview of Systems Engineering (system thinking, principle of proceeding, system phases of life, problem-solving process, iterative system development) with an emphasis on the problem solving-process. Day 1 is also possible as a «stand alone» seminar i.e. you may apply for this day only.

Day 2: Individual advice
Individual advice on company specific projects for the stages «situation analysis», «setting of objectives» and the first parts of «solution search – synthesis». The amount of time anticipated for this is one full day, divided into 2 to 3 consultations by agreement. Location: BWI, Kreuzplatz 5, 8032 Zurich.

Day 3: Workshop
A workshop will be held approx. 2.5 months after the initial seminar (Day 1). All participants’ company projects will be presented, discussed and appraised.

Methods
Systems Engineering is also taught within the scope of Engineering and in Management courses at ETH Zurich and also at some Universities of Applied Sciences. The beauty of the Systems Engineering method, which can be easily demonstrated in theoretical terms, lies in its practical application. The learning format for Day 1 is therefore a combination of classroom lecture and group work. During Day 2, one or more participants representing a company meet with BWI specialist for informal discussions but with a set agenda. Day 3 takes the form of a workshop.
